Secure Well Managed Infrastructure – S_W_M_I
A secure, well managed infrastructure is more than just technology. We start off with a secure location for your server room (preferably with a lock and a key and/or card access and/or video monitoring). You also need to limit access to your server room to authorized personal. It will also be imperative to limit access to the server(s) to your network administrator. Ensuring this level of security will minimize the potential for; a security breach, unauthorized server modifications or stolen, damaged or vandalized hardware.
Creating a strong password is also key as well as following the correct protocol for setting passwords. We can provide you information on the best practices for setting up passwords, just ask!
People & Their Roles
Identifying the role of the Network Administrator(s) is a key component to setting up a secure, well manged infrastructure. Care should be taken in selecting the right person or team for this role and setting up and executing a well written non-disclosure agreement. It is very important to have an effective reporting structure and a clear understanding of who can request server modifications or changes.
Having a paper trail to document server changes such as; promoting or demoting of domains, changing active directory and/or modifying user privileges. Be sure to disable all access for all employees that have been terminated as this is key to protecting your data.
Policy & Procedures
A companywide appropriate usage policy is also a great idea. This document will provide guidance for acceptable internet usage which will include such items as; torrents, inappropriate material, social networking sites and peer to peer networks etc. Having this policy in place will drastically reduce the chances of sensitive material being transmitted and employee time wasting.
Providing employees with a policy and training regarding acceptable use of email is always a good idea. Employees will learn to recognize and handle suspicious emails. Having a policy and procedure manual in place for guidelines on hiring and terminating employees with information on assessing their roles and security security privileges will help you maintain control of your data.
Acceptable Internet Usage Policy
In today’s business world the Internet has become an integral part of most businesses. Setting up an Internet Usage Policy is absolutely key in protecting your network from viruses and other problems. A good example of an unacceptable use of the internet is using “torrents”. A torrent is essentially a software program which allows you to download and/or upload (usually illegal); movies, music, software, applications etc. Each of these downloaded files have copyright issues identified with them. This type of downloading also causes many issues with the speed of internet bandwidth. Some other things that may be deemed unacceptable are inappropriate content, social networking sites, instant messaging, on line gambling, and the unauthorized transmission of data from the employee’s workstation or the network. All these activities, can increase your business exposure, and may have legal consequences.
